Radio towers and masts are known as the tallest man-made structures on earth as they can be higher than buildings and infrastructures. Basically, radio towers are built in a vertically and usually perched in an area where signal can be received and transmitted. They are usually erected on wide empty grounds or mountainous areas. Radio towers are connected to another structure called mast. These terms are defined differently under engineering terminology. A radio tower is cantilevered or self-supporting while antenna masts are supported by guys and stays. While towers are built vertically, masts are mounted on a particular structure following a vertical format. These are generally smaller in size and can be attached on vehicles, building or sidewall of a house.
Antenna Supports and Structures
There are specific places where antennas can be mounted or erected. Some of these structures are poles, buildings and disguised cell-sites. Antennas mounted on poles are made of tubular galvanized steel poles. Once these are assembled all together, it turns into a monopole. Antennas that are mounted on buildings, they have to be situated on the rooftop or any aerial location. These types of antennas serve several radio stations and local TV channels. The term “disguised cell-sites” was introduced because there are antenna types that are displayed in a hidden format. They can be attached to trees, chimneys, flagpoles, water tanks and church towers. Some telecommunication companies use this kind of system because they want to increase the number of their subscribers. Therefore, they resort to locations where signal is weak.
It takes feasibility and extensive study to put up an antenna or radio tower. The creation of these structures falls under communication systems design. The job requires skills and expertise that is why this only accomplished by men who have been trained and educated in such industry.
